The Smallsword (4 to 6:30pm)

An elegant weapon for stage & screen. From the late 17th to the beginning of the 19th century, the smallsword served as a civilian sidearm, a powerful symbol of rank in society and a deadly weapon on the dueling ground. Being shorter and lighter than the rapier gave the user the ability to deliver quick movements and precise thrusts. Duelists such as Julie d’Aubigny (La Maupin) and the Chevalier de Saint-George helped solidify the legacy of this weapon. It’s use can also be seen in films such as The Duelist. This 6-week track will begin by focusing on the subtle manipulations of the sword and footwork required for this quick and precise weapon. This will move into fundamental drills and maneuvers that will later be applied to choreography.
